Performer and private instructor in the Birmingham, Alabama area, Julia Gundacker earned her Master's degree in flute performance at The University of Alabama under  the instruction of Diane Boyd Schultz as a member of the Huxford Wind Quintet and Huxford Symphony Orchestra. She completed her undergraduate degree in Flute Performance at the University of Arizona with Brian Luce. There, she performed with many of the university's large ensembles, including the Arizona Symphony Orchestra, The UA Philharmonic Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Chamber Winds, and the University of Arizona’s resident flute choir, Flutefinity.  In 2016, she performed with Flutefinity at the National Flute Association convention in San Diego.  She was a founding member of UA Musicians on Tour, a group that promotes University of Arizona student performers throughout Arizona. With this group, Julia has performed a collaborative recital with harpist Hannah Knight, a solo recital with pianist Dylan Dominguez, and appeared in concert with world renowned harp ensemble, Harpfusion. 

 

Julia is an elementary school teacher and a flute teacher in the Birmingham area, teaching private lessons to students of varying ages, and has appeared as a coach to the flute section of the Pride of Prescott Marching Band, as well as to the Million Dollar Band at the University of Alabama.  Additionally, Julia was the flute instructor and coach for the University of Arizona Outreach Band for two years.  There, she sat in the section during rehearsal, serving as an example for proper playing and rehearsal technique and providing assistance when needed, and gave weekly sectionals/masterclasses to the students, providing more specific and individual instruction. She also participated in Tucson Summer Music as a flute instructor for free for low income families in the Tucson area.

 

Julia has given numerous performances and recitals throughout Arizona and Alabama, including numerous festivals, masterclasses, and competitions internationally.  She received the First Prize in the Prescott Center for the Arts competition as well as the Second Price in the Prescott Symphony Guild solo competition.  In her collegiate career, Julia has performed in masterclasses for renowned flutists such as Diane Boyd Schultz, Julieta Cedillo, Mary Karen Clardy, and Susan Milan.  In 2015, Julia was the runner up the Fred Fox School of Music President’s Concerto Competition, where she performed Andre Jolive’s Flute Concerto.  In the summer of 2015, Julia was an orchestral flutist, chamber musician, and soloist in the International Lyric Academy in Viterbo, Soriano nel Cimino, and Tarquinia, Italy. She was awarded 2nd place in the graduate division of the University of Alabama School of Music Concerto Competition for her performance of Nielsen's Flute Concerto. Julia was a performing member of the Columbia Civic Orchestra in Columbia, Missouri.
